Wayne Stetski and NDP stalwart Peter Julian announce NDP will deliver real support to families, build more resilient communities and take climate action

CRANBROOK – With out-of-control wildfires threatening homes in the Kootenays more
frequently, an NDP government will deliver immediate disaster relief funds when families need it.
Kootenay-Columbia NDP candidate Wayne Stetski made the announcement in Cranbrook,
joined by NDP stalwart Peter Julian, saying the promise would mean that when a wildfire, flood or other disaster forces people to evacuate their homes, they would receive immediate support to prevent them from being out-of-pocket for big costs.
“When families are forced to evacuate their homes, they need help now,” said Stetski. “We
can’t afford another four years of Justin Trudeau not stepping up with enough supports for
families in danger. New Democrats will fight to put money in people’s pockets right away, and take the meaningful action needed to protect people over the long term.”
An NDP government will provide an additional $3 billion over four years for this fund, which will also invest in better protection for communities and more climate resilient infrastructure.
“The only time Justin Trudeau rolls up his sleeves to get to work is when he’s shooting a TV ad,” said Julian. “He teamed up with Conservatives to side with big corporations instead of
protecting you and your family. That’s not leadership. Jagmeet Singh and New Democrats will deliver what’s needed.”
As part of this commitment, New Democrats would provide support for wildfire mitigation
strategies as well as training and equipment for firefighters, including Indigenous-led crews.
Stetski says protecting people from future disasters also means taking important actions to
fight the climate crisis. This announcement would build on the NDP’s climate action plan to
protect our air, land and water and create good, clean jobs.
