Sophie Pierre Endorses Wayne Stetski

March 24, 2021

I am pleased to provide this letter of endorsement for Wayne Stetski.

From the very first time I met Wayne in the mid 1990’s, while he worked as District Manager for BC Parks and later as Regional Manager for BC Ministry of Environment, I have always appreciated his deep love and respect for our beautiful part of the world and for all the people who call this place home. In particular he showed respect for the Ktunaxa Nation and strove to include us in the operations and decisions affecting our lands and people.

As Mayor of Cranbrook, Wayne was ahead of the times by embracing Reconciliation long before it became the right thing to do in Canada. He participated as a municipal government representative in Treaty negotiations between the Province and the Ktunaxa Nation. But most importantly he supported the need to establish meaningful programs for disenfranchised citizens in and around Cranbrook through the establishment of the Street Angels initiative and continued his support as our Member of Parliament.

Wayne is the kind of person we need in Ottawa; someone who cares deeply about the environment and the people of this often ignored region. He understood and supported the protection of Qatmuk, the Jumbo, from destructive development plans being pursued by industry and other governments. This support and the tabling of the Navigable Waters Protection Act to protect our lake and rivers among many other initiatives proves to me that his commitment to our region, environment and people is what drives him every day.

I am pleased and proud to call Wayne a friend and colleague and to support him as Member of Parliament Candidate for Kootenay – Columbia.

With respect,

Sophie Pierre

Former Chief and Ktunaxa Elder
