The Canada Day reconciliation ceremony and walk-in Fernie was a most appropriate way to participate in a day that is generally about remembering our history.
The event was hosted by Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it Chief Heidi Gravelle and Mayor Ange Qualizza, accompanied by Ktunaxa drummers and singers. While part of the day was about sadness and healing, the main message was about the need for Canadians to educate themselves about residential schools, support their indigenous friends and neighbours, and move forward together to make a better Canada.
Hundreds of people walked in their orange shirts in the procession while hundreds of others lined the streets in downtown Fernie. It was an honour to be there and to walk in solidarity with so many caring people. I can think of no better way to mark Canada Day 2021.
